Growing Up
Emotional barriers
Are stronger than steel,
More massive than the Lord of the Rings’ box office,
And more ethereal than Peter Pan—
I would doubt the forces of magic
If not for their unworldly, ungodly fortitude.
Guardians of the heart, called in times of darkness and fear,
Swipe away confusion with the flick of a
Giant massive permanent wall
That cuts off everything that’s
Ever been
And ever could be.
No room for mistakes here—
Millennia into the future, you could try
Corroding it with the power of a nuclear bomb
And it would hardly crack.
The destruction of everything ever, forever,
That’s the price you pay.
Call me crazy, but
I don’t see how anyone can bring themselves
To strike that deal with the devil.
But that might be the poetry talking.
Lovers often say they would cross oceans, traverse
To the ends of the earth
For the other
If they needed to.
If only it was that easy.
If only a secret ingredient to
Destroying an
Emotional barrier
Could be found in the physical realm,
Was hidden in some dense jungle or
Barren wasteland,
And one could swim, sprint, crawl,
Soar to retrieve it and
End up—
Rugged, filthy, compromised, smiling—
To knock at the gate
And make everything okay.
Because if it would help to cross the oceans
My tears have created
Or face the monsters
You’ve hidden in your closet,
I would
I would.
But emotional barriers are magic,
And unlike Peter Pan, I guess we
All have to grow up
One way or another.
