"And I am aware of my heart; it opens and closes." -Sylvia Plath

Your gaze sets on mine,
My heart pounding in my chest
With hope? Or fear of hope?

The radiance of your smile
Slowly picks up the shards of my soul.
I am struck with the terror of being
Stabbed in the chest,
Tempted to break free from the daring rush.

But am I?

Your hand reaches for mine
And I stretch my arm in desperation
To escape this hesitation that knows me
All too well.

I fear I will fall once again,
Shatter into broken bits of lost despair.
I fear that instead of letting me break,
You will pull me into your arms
And welcome me home.

I am a runaway.
When thunder rolls into my life,
I am gone with the flashes of lightning.

I do not want to leave you
Standing in the storm alone,
As the rain blends with your tears,
Your screams escaping with the wind.

Because I am familiar with the weight of loneliness
Which is why I must try
To prevent my heart from wilting
Before it has the chance to bloom.

But you are pulling me in,
And I am letting you.
Your touch causes shivers
To sneak upon my spine.
Your whispers scatter goosebumps
Along the landscapes of my skin.

If this rush pulsing throughout my body,
Is the sacrifice I must make for love,
It is worth the collapse of my heart
As it folds into you.
