I’m under,
So far under I can’t see.
Darkness.
My lungs are burning, aching.
I can see the light.
Not Death, not yet.
It’s the surface.
I kick and thrash and reach for the sparkling foam above me
But I am pulled down, down, down
By pain, angst, fear, life.
I see the surface slipping away, right through my outstretched fingers.
It feels like my lungs exploded.
Bitter water fills my gaping mouth,
A silent scream slices through the murky water.
I am lost among misery.
Suddenly, cool fingers entwine with my cold ones,
Hope fills my my heart, soul, mind.
I am no longer drowning.
I break through the surface,
A smiling face, deep blue eyes.
My breaths are ragged and painful but
I Am Alive.
I step back into the unforgiving world and
This time, I won’t drown.
