"Waves"

I reach my arm out as if I could stretch across the water
and touch the other side.
I can't.
I squeeze my eyes closed tight and pretend I can.
The boat sways and I almost tumble in,
my fingers skimming the waves.
The breeze is soft silken syllables whispered in my ear,
heaven and earth and me sandwiched in between them,
trying to feel my way.
