Overtaken
There is nothing like childhood. It brings simple pleasure, unconditional love, unprecedented purity. But something has been lost. They say wonder is weakness, innocence is ignorance. They tell you “grow up” and you hear them and you listen. You find yourself in the struggle between viridity and maturity. The war rages on. Maturity attacks with reason, doubt, fear. And viridity parries with hope, love, kindness. But the victor is already decided. Doubt is a seed. Once planted, it grows. And grows. And you are overtaken. No more swings at playgrounds. No more ice cream cones at the beach. No more pure joy at a good night’s kiss. And you are overtaken.

In my poem, Overtaken, my aim was to address a dark yet universal truth in no more than a paragraph. My hope is that this artistic brevity allows the reader to fill in the details between the lines, creating a personal connection to the subject addressed.
