He was a scared cat, confined in a home
where no sliver of life was ever shown.
He lived monotonous days,
unaware of the earth’s strange ways.

One morning, a life-altering date,
a door was left ajar and drew him out like bait.
At the foreign view, his eyes went wide.
These monstrous beings (called trees!) towered with pride,
and mockingbirds sung their jovial tune
under the skin-warming sun of June.

It felt so innate, to allow his legs to carry him
to the old oak tree, across the strong, high limb.
He looked out across the unchartered terrain
as he felt the novel pleasure of a light summer rain.

A leap of faith, and he soared through the air,
and landed on the ground without a snare.
If he hadn’t waved his prison good-bye,
he never would have known what it felt like to fly.
Now, don’t you see?
Curiosity did not kill the cat,
but made him so much more free.
