"Be yourself, everyone else is already taken."-Oscar Wilde

There are no barbarians any longer,
Extinction found them long ago,
Their villages are now ruin and rubble,
They died arm in arm, friend and foe.

There are no barbarians any longer,
We could not let them go on,
They had pagan religions and rituals,
We disagreed; we believed that they were wrong.

There are no barbarians any longer,
Our dogs hunted them all down,
They wore tribal robes and rags,
They were primitive, their king wore no crown.

There are no barbarians any longer,
Our knights killed every last child,
They didn’t have our regulations or rules,
We’re responsible; we couldn’t let them run wild.

There are no barbarians any longer,
We did what we thought was right,
But now I look around my civilised city,
Barbarians are the only sight.

The author's comments:

I was inspired to write this by various historical events in which people thought that others were barbarians or uncivilised just because they belonged to a different culture and then took it upon themselves to convert the people to their way of thinking or to wipe them out completely. I wanted to show how it is the 'civilised' who carry out acts of cruelty and brutality isn't an act by one group.
