Where I'm From

I am from the summer days,
without a care in the world.
From no school and no work,
Just spending time with friends
I’m from the beating sun and humid air,
and the taste of ice cream after a day of play

I am from moving schools twice,
and losing my friends.
From eating enough for two plates
for years on end.
I’m from the doctor telling me that
I need to be healthier.
But what does he know?

I am from the jokes and laughter,
I went along with to be accepted
Constant smiles, constant laughter, constant dread,
Afraid my true feelings would be exposed.
I’m from the clever remarks that I’ve heard before,
But not letting them see the truth.

I am from the brightest days and darkest nights,
where the moon overpowers the sun.
From rejecting food, what has it done for me?
Eating one meal a day.
I’m from avoiding mirrors and pictures,
my internal enemies.

I am from the “congratulations” and the “wow, you’ve changed!”
But never feeling good enough.
From taking it too far, too much running, not enough food,
Eyes open on the tarmac, head pounding
I’m from my doctor telling me that
I need to be healthier.
But what does he know?
