I think I know who I am,

but that may just be who

I think you think I am.

So who am I?

Am I the five-year old gamer

who grew up playing Dynasty Warriors

instead of the more “ladylike” Barbie,

role playing with warlords

instead of plastic dolls?

Or am I the gawky sixth grader

who wore sweatpants and sweatshirts

everyday in middle school,

but has now found comfort in

patterned skirts and tucked in t-shirts?

You can also say I’m the diffident girl

who will shyly say hi to you in the hallways

or give you a timid smile

in fear that you might not remember her,

or worse, not want to say hi.

Conversely, I can be the zealous friend

whose eyes light up at the mention of

playing a board game

or hamsters or her favorite books or

anything really.

Alternatively, I’m the aloof teenager

who might act nonchalant

when you compliment her,

but is secretly ecstatic that you did

and will hold onto every word to cherish.

Will I ever complete this jigsaw puzzle of who I am?

There are an infinite number of pieces,

each one with its unique curves and edges

that I believe I never will.
