She came from the sky

He realizes this when he sees her

For the first time

Stargazing

Tunneling every pore of her existence

Into imaginary telescopes

Wishing on celestial fires

For a flame of her own

From that moment on

He wanted to become the stars

He wanted her to stare at him

Like he was something beautiful

Wanted her to place her hands together

In reflective L-shapes

Thumbs touching

Trace the lines between his joints

As if they were really there

He wanted her to make stories about him

Turn his ankles into chained princess

His hair into mythical beasts

He wanted her to be enchanted with him

Willing to lie on dew-dipped grass

Stay out way past midnight

Just to be in his presence

He wanted this of a girl

Who came from the sky

He fooled himself into forgetting:

Everything finds its way back home

He loses her

To the thrum of night

Swallowed up by innumerable black

Planets bouncing across her cheeks

He stands at the edge of his sanity

Feet braced and shoulders wide

Launches himself into the crack of dawn

Curves his fingers into the fissure between

The sky and the earth

Splits the two like they did to her

He holds up the night

To find her

Scratches under layers of Erebus

Gathers desperation in the form of Nyx

He pulls apart each cloud

Each whisp of air

Every strand of sky

Holding it and the earth together

If they must be apart

So must the universe

She came from the sky

He carries its burden

An assignment in English class prompted us to create a poem inspired by characters or situations from Greek mythology. This is the result.

To love is to be vulnerable; Triumph is born out of struggle; We notice shadows most when they stand alone in the midst of overwhelming light.
