Holy Smokes
Looking at the light between your lips,
as you bow to take some cover
I noticed how your hair falls straight no longer than your shoulder
Seeing you giddy to breathe in
the things that f*** us over
as you spark the flame inside the walls of your palm
It’s when you came to ask me on a Wednesday night
for a few sticks of death.
I’d like to think you did, for all the different reasons
While we sat there with the sounds – of our ribs going up and down,
Of the conversations I don’t wanna have,
Still I’m glad I’m having it with you
You puffed words that smoldered me from the inside-out
Realized my heart is a burden,
I just need another pair of lungs to get me by
When what’s left is the silence and a twinge in my gut
You read prints on the carton, and said
“The warnings were made to be ignored,” I nod my head twice
The rest of the night we didn’t do much
You laugh at the random,
While misery tried to hold on to the glow in my mouth
And it’s colder than ever for the fire that I breathe
Just gets lost in my cruel thoughts
Of you walking further as the ashes fall grey
While you talk about things I don’t wanna hear
I just wish that somehow
the number of things that burn in my mouth
counts to you
