The color of hunger is not a beautiful thing.
It numbers your ribs
and stares at your bones.
It is the voice of moving joints
so achy under a baggy shirt.
The color of hunger is a focused pull
similar to that of depression.
It can still a thought
and it can still a heartbeat.
The color of hunger is an ugly maroon.
It is the frustration on your wrists
and the tears on your lips.
It is not romantic, and does not try to be.
The color of hunger is an allergy
that closes your throat
and locks your jaw
only to feel a lovely emptiness.
The color of hunger is a division
between mind and body.
It is a separation between feeling okay
and being okay.
