The greatest emotion of man is fear, and the greatest of those is fear of the unknown.

Snow falls in droves,

Obscuring my vision as my flashlight tries in vain to pierce the gloom.
Broken windows, fragile, cracked portals,

Litter the streets,

Reminiscent of former glory.

The ice coats everything,

Preserving and imprisoning the abandoned town.
Hideous creatures lurk in the shadows,

The specters’ screams a warning to those who try to leave the wasteland.

A screech pierces the air,

And no matter how I try, no man can run forever.
Hands around my throat, blackness eating at my vision,

And as I fade, a voice: “Sleep now, in the eternal silence.”

And then a peace,

Starting in its utter completeness,

And I know that I have failed…

But I just can’t bring myself to care…
