"what awaits is a mystery, what you do is a clue"

i'm staring at the wall.
my eyes zone in and out of focus.
there’s nothing wrong with me, really
other than the weight of a truck
compressing my cranium.
finals begin today, it is 2 am.
i can't fail
i can't fail
i can fail
i will fail
i will not fail.
what use is it anyway?
it is of much use
its too late
but this is important
says who?
this is important.
i already have a good grade
if you fail this, you will fail the class
you will fail in life
there’s no proof of that
this is important.
my brain needs sleep
it also needs a good grade
i wont be able to concentrate
even if i can focus, what use is it
if i don’t know the material
why didn’t i study last week?
i regret everything
i bet the valedictorian studied last week
i bet he’s sleeping right now
why can’t i be like him?
why am i so irresponsible?
will i ever begin to manage my time?
how am i going to be a successful adult
if i continue my lazy teenage life rituals?
i shall study now
but first, i’ll cut out flashcards
and sharpen my pencils
i need an eraser as well, i’ll have to find that
my brain can’t function properly without a snack!
let’s make it a meal; i am famished.
oh no
it is 5 am
time to go
you can’t fail
you can’t fail
i hope you don’t fail.

i'm positive all teenagers can relate, especially at this time of year.
