Man Be My Metaphor

I saw our relationship

As two ships sailing

Side by side into the uncharted ocean

We had no clue where we were going

And we were very frightened

But at least we had someone

To be scared with.

But slowly, my boat became worn,

And torn, and weakened

By the constant rain.

And water seeped in through the cracks

And I know we said

That we’d take this trip together

But I’m a sinking ship

And I don’t want you drowning with me.

So I let my boat sink,

And as the water snuck up calves,

And thighs, and waist,

I looked into your eyes.

And I saw that they were begging.

Begging for me to float.

And as my eyes filled with tears,

So did yours,

And the look on your face

Made me believe

That you were in a dark room

With one light

And that light was fading, fast.

My heart was pounding hard

As I felt the water creep

Up over my neck.

As I went under

I remembered all the mistakes

I had ever made

And screamed with all my might

But all that came out were a few bubbles.

And as my lungs burned with a lack of oxygen

I reminded myself that it will be better

When I’m on the other side.

As my consciousness faded,

And my muscles relaxed,

The only image that burned my mind was you.

And I began to cry

And my tears melted

Into the salty ocean.

I thought of how badly I wished

That I could be wrapped in your arms

And fill my nose with your scent.

As I faded further,

I felt you grab my wrist,

And pull me to the surface.

And when we got to the top,

I kissed you, and then I breathed.

Because you are more important

Than the oxygen in my lungs.

And as you held me close,

For the life of me I couldn’t decide

Which shined brighter,

You or the sun.
