Purple and black,
Mixed with yellow and blue.
Mottled, patched; some old, some new.
Laid out on bare white skin,
Punishment for some unknown sin.

The author's comments:
I have several friends who have been the victims of self-abuse and several acquaintances who have been abused. I've never understood how either could occur, so I wrote this poem.
