Be Brave

The hallowed halls of high school glowing
Something wicked is blowing
Wall-to-wall with anxiety
A nervous flutter
Indecisive clutter
Too scared to mutter

Our real desires
What makes us inspired
What burns in our fires
Worried others will conspire

Longing to…
Express
Confess
Lay to rest
all the lofty expectations

With each thought. Bam.
With each judgment. Slam.
With each limitation. Crash.
With each “no you can’t.” Clang.
A box is built with you in the center
Don’t let them

Confine you

Define you

Refine your passions
Don’t make that grave mistake

Be you. Be Brave.

The author's comments:
I was inspired to write this poem from my observations in high school. People tend to act a certain way to gain popularity or because of external pressures, and lose themselves in the process. Do you really want to take all those AP classes or is that an expectation from your parents? Would you really audition for the school play if you weren't scared the other students would harass you? I hope to inspire people to forget about others' opinions and do what makes their hearts race with pure joy.
