Dead Butterflies
You let me open up your chest
Each stitch tighter and tighter than the rest
I found your cage in which you kept the wild things
I found my heart inside your cage in which you kept the wild things
I recognized it from the scars but I know my heart is rightfully yours
Among my heart I found your spirit and right it is to be there
But at the bottom of the cage I found something so sad I heard the stars cry
There were dead butterflies.
I try to revive them by kissing you
But their lips are too small to breathe through
And their wings too torn to beat
I tear the thread from my cage not believing what I see
A million butterflies but no heart for me.
Your heart was in another girl's cage where she kept the wild things.
You opened your cage and with a creak it gave
You reached for my heart with your cold dry hands
In pieces it crumbled "Sorry" you said
"Keep it," I mumbled "I'll love only you until I'm dead"
But you picked up the pieces and put them right back
They slit my wrists as they fell in my chest
The pieces fell piercing the wings of the butterflies and the other wild things
You laced it up tight with a strand of my hair
And gave me a chance to pretend I'm all there.
Alone I laid back and bled to my tears
A million butterflies I did not hear.
