It comes silently
you don’t know
that it’s there
until you’re too late

Your eyes grow wide
your heart skips a beat
you cringe at
the fetid smell of decay

you try to ignore it
it might go away
but instead
it grows stronger

the wailing starts
one voice, then many
it is angry merciless
cruel

piercing talons
reach out
you flinch
at every blow

You stand and turn
to face your foe
at least you will fall
with pride

Take a breath
a humble sigh
you say yes,
it was I
who farted.

The author's comments:
So many poems exist about love, fear, and joy, but not many, it seems, about this type of humiliation.
