"I don't know half of you half as well as I should like and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve."

The monster looked at me with sad eyes
Waiting and waiting for whippings and lies
When the darkness came, I could hear its soft cries
Along with the stench and the buzzing of flies

The poor creature sat with its head bowed to me
It knew that in its heart was only blackness we could see
It gave up its hopes of someday breaking free
It was locked up in this cage and for it there was no key

It ignored its pain for no one could understand
Where it came from or what it called homeland
But it knew what the bad men had specially planned
To burn it until it was just a sad pile of sand

The beast raised its paw and laid it on my arm
I knew at once that it would do me no harm
Along with its mane it carried something of a charm
I felt no need to sound the alarm

Just when I thought I could help it run away
It turned from gentle to brutal as night to day
What I said wrong to it no one could say
But I already know that I forgave it anyway
