Be Pretty Inside
Most days you feel non-existent,
Just a shadow unheard and unseen.
You shuffle along, a ghost of a girl,
Don’t stray from the daily routine.
You can’t help but feel the pressure,
Whenever you’re at school.
The cliques, the gangs,
The stupid definitions of what’s ‘cool’
You’ve got hundreds of bottles to make you look pretty,
Standing carefully on the shelf.
And a burning desire to be someone else.
Why can’t you just be yourself?
Just a longing for acceptance,
But you’re making a mistake,
Trying to be those girls in magazines.
Can’t you see it’s fake?
Will the makeup make you better?
Will the new clothes make you nice?
Are their insults really kinder,
when they’re given as ‘advice’?
Are they really all that pretty,
With their mouths turned down in sneers?
Are you sure you want to be friends
With these bullies that picked on you for years?
Are these people really funnier
Than the old friends that you had?
Does being the joke make you laugh?
Or does it just make you feel bad?
Ignore all those people,
That don’t have a clue.
Forget about them,
Break free.
Be you.
