I've Never Seen Him Cry

I’ve never seen him cry
but the tears on my cheeks
when we kiss late on a Friday night
are not my own.
I’ve never seen him cry
but the way his body shakes
as he sleeps on a Sunday morning
are not shivers.
I’ve never seen him cry
but the way his voice cracks
as he tells me about his brother
who quit
no, who left
no, who moved on
no, who was taken
no, who is wrapped
in the very blanket that kept him warm
is so much worse.
