the fringes of existence

i live on the fringe of existence
the shadowy apparition you catch
out of the corner of your eye
i am in the water you drink
the slight hint of something metallic
i am the shimmering mirage
hovering above the black tarmac
on a summer’s afternoon
i am a fragmented dream
lingering in your mind for only
a brief moment when you wake up
i am a waft of something sweet
emanating from the unknown
fleeting, disappearing swiftly
i am the last drag of a cigarette
when the flavor turns sooty
i am the static on a tv screen
the same static that dances
on the backs of your eyelids at night
i am the whisper of your name
that you thought you imagined
i am everything you have never noticed
yet pieces of me are in every
particle of oxygen you breathe
i waver and wander in solitude
i am everything at once and nothing at all
i exist in the fringes of existence
