Sail Away

One day I get the call,
That dreaded call I didn’t know was coming.
How did it happen so fast?
How did I not know?
You sailed away without a warning,
No time for me to say goodbye.
I race quickly to the bay,
But your ship has gone too far for me to see.
Collapsing on the beach I wonder:
How could you leave me?
Did I not love enough?
Try hard enough?
Pray enough?
No one can find me an answer.
I try to find you,
Try to see if I can yell
Loud enough for you to hear me.
But again I get no answer.
Minutes, hours, days and suddenly years go by
And I still can’t seem to accept that you left me.
And still, every time I go to that bay,
I still expect to see you,
Expect the big bear hug I always got.
But atlas it never comes,
And I stand here alone.

My grandfather died suddenly. He has ALS but the doctors had given him two years. He died from a heart failure not even a year after diagnosis.
