The Longing Swings

I went to the old park yesterday
And I jumped on our favorite swing
The one on the left, closest to the tree.
And yesterday while I swung,
I remembered your voice
how it was always so fresh
And how it smelled of pink bubblegum.
I remembered what you said to me
The last time we met at the swings
How you said you were going away
(forever was the forgotten word)
You looked at me
With your light hazel eyes—
The ones that always turned blue when you cried.
But you weren’t crying,
(your eyes were bright green)
You were laughing and smiling
As you dreamed of places
That would call our names
(but I couldn’t go, you see, not anymore)
And as I looked at you
And as we promised to never forget
Tears leapt from my eyes, begging you to stay.
But you didn’t see them,
You were already gone.
Yet still I called after you,
My voice muffled and small:
“Don’t stop until you’ve found yourself,
Until you reach me again.”
But I suppose you lost yourself even more
On that day when you left
For you haven’t come back
And the swing to my left is empty,
Barely having the strength to sway in the wind.
