For Lonely Nights
I laid in bed, bundled up
in a cocoon of blankets,
reading yet another Hopkins' novel.
I thought of you as I stared at
the toes of my gray knit slippers,
aimlessly swaying from side-to-side.
I wore a pink wool sweater
that reminded me of your
warm, comforting embrace.
I like to believe that
each and every one of these
lonely nights that I must go through,
might just bring me closer to you;
and I truly hope that we can be together someday,
or maybe we'll slip through the cracks,
our love will fall apart, just as I am.
I'll have to get used to the accompaniment of
literature and music,
the faint sound of the wind,
the sound of my heart beating,
like the saddest of metronomes.
That sounds more like it.
