"Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing." -Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird

When I was little
I stood smack in the middle
Of something
But I wasn’t sure what.
When I was small
I didn’t look left or right
When I was crossing the light
I just walked.
When I was a kid
I just did what I did
My sneakers would skid
And nobody could stop me.
When I was small
They were big
They were tall
But all faces were friendly to me.
I would hold out my hand
Side by side we would stand
And we’d go on a trip
they had planned me.
When I was tiny
I would wander with glee
And when I was lost
They would find me.
With a brave face
I’d confront cuts and scrapes
And continue to play
If only a child I stayed.
