Favorite Quote:
A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads only lives one.
-George R. R. Martin

I used to pretend I was a spy
but nobody ever wanted to talk about anything interesting
I used to pretend I was a princess
but then I learned it was more than just ball gowns and true love
I used to pretend I was a fairy
but growing up ripped off my wings so I couldn’t fly
I used to pretend I was the birthday queen
but then I had to change my ways or my subjects would disappear
I used to pretend I was a turtle
but someone always sat on my shell and squished me
I used to pretend I was the best singer in the world
but then someone always came along to prove they were better
I used to pretend I was a ballerina
but people came and laughed at my mistakes
I used to pretend
but society taught me not to

The author's comments:
One day I was getting ready to go to school, and I saw my brother playing pretend. I thought of how I used to play that. I also thought that if I did that now at my age, people would laugh at me or think I was weird. That is where I got the idea for the poem. I hope that what you will get from this poem is: Don't be afraid to do something you like. Don't give in to peer pressure.
