Today is the day
I’m sixteen at last
My new car is here

I can’t wait to drive
Mom hands me the keys
And wishes me luck
I hop in the seat
It roars to a start
I pull the top down
Excitement fills me

Sunshine heats my car

I jump at the sound
But hear my mom’s voice
“Don’t answer the phone
While you are driving!”
My life is worth more
Than this little call
This conversation
Is not important
Proud of my choices

After this joyride
I walk to my door
Mom congratulates
Me for a good drive
“You passed my small test
And didn’t answer
Your ringing cell phone
I’m scared when you drive
