Thank the Mighty Wind

My love and I
We’re perfect
She and I
Where I’m weak, she is strong
When she falls, I’m her knight
If I’m angry, scared or worried
She knows exactly how to chase it all away
And when her nightly terrors come
I am there, calm in the storm
I’m her steadfast anchor
Strong and true
She’s my little flower
Lovely and sweet
Though some things about us don’t quite meet
I like to read
And she…well…not
We sing the same tune
And dance like one

There is a scar upon my chest
That aches in the cold
But when she puts her warm hand on it
The pain becomes nevermore
There is a mark upon my head
A badge of bravery just for her
She has whip marks across her back
That none but I may touch
And a tattoo upon her shoulder
From a master thankfully long gone
Now she wears it proudly
For I set her free
That she might live
But in the night
Her master comes to visit
And she wakes in fright
From dreams too terrible to recount
But I am always there

When first she came to my land
On the mighty ship of the islands
She was her master’s slave
Devoted servant unwilling to be
Early one morn
As master lay in drunken stupor
She called out my name
“Sir James, Sir James”
Then she collapsed into tears
In a land where slavery was detested
She sought out the judge, the just
She sought out me
Master enraged that I should steal
Did hit me o’er the head
A duel commenced
For which he was out matched
Despite blood flowing in my eyes
A badge of bravery just for her

My sister took her in
Made a lady out of her
But she has a lilting accent
And a tendency to clean
Ruining nice dresses
Causing Anna to despair
And the maids to complain
My brother looks on her with fondness
Enjoys teaching her to read
And showing her that all is right and good
In this new land of hers
She didn't give us a name
We called her a great many things
Until one night
As I knelt by her bed
Stroking away fears from her face
She whispered “Miri”
The smallest, sweetest flower

It was inevitable that we fall in love
But we two were the last to know
I sear all the country knew before us
My sister saw it first
Miri’s such a shy thing
When it falls upon her not to talk
She reaches for my hand
Hides behind my shoulder
Her undisputed knight
In a fit of boldness
One evening in the garden
She kissed me soft upon the cheek
And when Anna calmly asked
I began to see
All the things Miri’d done
And I as well
That had brought about
This love between us

My love and I
We’re perfect
She and I
She’s my flower
I’m her knight
We’re happy here
In this castle
Caer Avalon
We don’t see our nightmares
Not as much
Now that the other’s here
We keep at bay all the dreams
Each other’s shield till the day
And when the daylight comes
We show each other
Something new of life
I thank the mighty wind
Which brought my love to me
