Eat. Pray. Eat.

I don’t understand why these men took us here,
and stole our clothes and hair.
They commandeer
our faith and force us to hide our prayer.

Mum said she hopes that we can bear
the pain that we will all surely come to know.
I now know that these men will never care
about the pain and suffering that my people undergo.

Although I can now see my forlorn fate
as the others fight for just a feeble crumb.
As my mum goes to the left and I to the right she says “Kate,
you must survive whatever is to come.”

So day by day,
I will wait by this buzzing fence with no idea of future tense.
In hopes that one day I can stray
on the outside of this chain-link fence.

I wrote this about a year ago while my class was doing a unit on the Holocaust. Enjoy!
