Extremeties
If you were to ask her what she wanted
to see in the world, she wouldn’t tell you
the simplicity of love or peace on earth.
No, not those extremities, she doesn’t wish
for the peace of the world but for the peace
within herself. She needn’t wish for love
of a boy, but for her self worth to be more
than the knife she aches to hold against
her wrist. If you were to ask her what she
wanted to see in the world, she woudn’t tell
you that she adored the sound of the ocean
or that the sky before the birds chirp was her
favorite outline of life. She would tell you
that her favorite color is green, and maybe,
had you asked sooner, she would have told
you that she couldn’t fall asleep at night.
If you were to ask her what she wanted
to see in the world, it wouldn’t be the
riches of celebrities, or the view from
above the airplane and below the skyline.
She would tell you she wishes somone like
you would ask her more than what she wanted
to see because what she really wants is for
understanding. What she really wants to feel
from the world is hope, is love, is happiness.
If you were to ask her what she wanted
to see in the world, she wouldn’t tell you
the simplicity of love or peace on earth.
No, not those extremities.
