a loveliness of ladybirds

September 15, 2013
i have never come across such an elegant culture
as that of the ladybird, so high and refined!
and quite a bit snobbish, one can’t help but find—
they are so sophisticated (at least, the adults’re),
they distinguish quite neatly between their two kinds:
(although the difference, i fear, is invisible to me)
the american ladybugs are considered coarse fools,
who pay no attention to social customs and rules,
while the ladybirds from england, over the sea,
polish their shells, attend finishing schools,
and perch on a cup-rim to sip someone’s tea.
