"All of time and space; everywhere and anywhere; every star that ever was. Where do you want to start?"

We were young heroes
Bright eyes
Soaring dreams

You can be whatever you want
They said
Dragon rider, spy, detective

Wooden sticks
Dirt clot wars
Blanket forts

We’ll never be like them
We said
Adults with stupid ties
And stupid lies

We were young heroes
Broken eyes
Sorrow’s darkness

Metal swords
Brown brick buildings
Big empty houses

You can be what’s best
They said
Doctor, lawyer, scientist

Why were we ever like them
We said
Kids with stupid toys
And their stupid noise

The author's comments:
As young kids, we're so unjaded and so curious about the world. We ask so many questions and want to know so many things. We aren't afraid to get dirty and messy. And then we grow up, and I don't know what happens. Things change; feelings change; attitudes change. We become so wrapped in trivial things and we're so worried about everything that we forget how to be children again. We forget to play and laugh and just enjoy simple things.
