cigarette smoke
your shoulder blades
the stiff shudder as you cried on me, after her, after everything
you didn't know what to do and so
i held onto you
tight because i knew you needed me there
and i was there.
your hair was long and dirty and smelled like you
your menthol Camels and masculinity
but still a broken heart overpowered it all
and i always thought that you were brave or at least careless
but as you lean on me outside your car
late at night
only the orange light between your broken fingers glowed
and that is how you taught me
how love goes.

and i always thought that you were brave or at least careless but as you lean on me outside your car late at night only the orange light between your broken fingers glowed and that is how you taught me how love goes.   I'm marveled with the talent you possess to create such beautiful words, sincere and touching. I'm assuming this is an Alex poem by how you begin it. How he came to you when things were over with "her". And by how you thought he was indifferent and in the end he taught you the real meaning of love. This poem is again one of your best. Congrats on the Editors' Choice. This poem is 5/5!
