"Reading gives us a someplace to go when we have to stay where we are." -Mason Cooley

It was torture
But it was fun
To see how long I could go

The anticipation
The promise of coming back
I knew my hope was already black

You told me it wasn’t going to happen
That you would always be an absence
I should stop wishing
Because you weren’t kidding

I was going to win this contest
Between my hopes and reality
Even if it brought agony
I am not going to breathe

I could once hear my heart beat to the rhythm of yours
I knew every one of your pores
Your heart was cold, yes?
But even then, my desires progressed

The smirk on your lips disappeared
As your body plead for air
The edges of my vision danced with shadows
Confirming what I had feared

I saw your back heading for the door
Leaving this juvenile game behind.
You abandoned me Miles
I should’ve saw the signs

The game was over
you forfeit
I could set to emerge
As soon as I could commit

I didn’t want to lose
I ached for you
How could I let go
Of everything I knew

I told you,
I would win
I would hold my breath
Yes, even when you left

The author's comments:
When I initially started this piece I wrote about the literal meaning of holding one's breath. At the very end of my poem I realized the figurative meaning of it, and rewrote it so it would cross between the two.
