"...I wrote because that was who I was at the core, and if I was too damaged to walk around the block, I was lucky all the same. Once I got to my desk, once I started writing, I still believed anything was possible.”
-Alice Hoffman

We are the kids with the tears in our eyes,
The ones without ladders to reach for the sky.
We are the kids with the broken hearts,
The ones who always hear “Till tonight do us part."
We are the kids with the dyed hair and ripped jeans,
The ones who are never quite what they seem.
We are the kids using books to hide from the world,
The ones who are more quiet than other boys and girls.
We are the kids with the angry glares and balled up fists,
The ones who have taken shots and always missed.
We are the kids who have banded together,
The ones who went from misfits to friends forever.
We are the kids holding each other’s hands
The ones helping one another cross a dark dark land.
We are the kids with words like band-aids,
The ones who heal the cuts and give smiles like candy.
We are the kids picking each other up after a bad day,
The ones who bring color into skies of gray.
We are the kids who can smile and laugh
The ones who need to learn that more than science or math.
We are the kids who have taken stands
The ones who are brave and rise to hold each other’s hands.
We are the kids who have finally grown up,
The ones who grew strong on each other’s love.
