Mental Impressions Retained
A swift thought.
A look back.
A recollection of simpler times.
A mental impression retained.
Memories.
My grandpa, my cousin, my sister, and I shucking corn.
The birth of my only brother.
Innocent kids that didn’t know any better.
A trip to Disney World.
Memories.
Hoping to never forget the good,
but wanting the bad to disappear.
Recalling the people, the places, the experiences,
the laughter and the pain.
Memories.
Getting my very own dog.
Nearly drowning at the lake.
The distant relatives, the long trip up north, witnessing events,
the traditions and the occasional hospital scare.
Memories.
The familiar sounds,
and scenery,
and textures and tastes,
and even scents that one commemorates.
Memories.
Terrible screeching of nails on a chalkboard.
The stunning view from my bedroom window.
Sharp blades of summertime grass.
Tangy barbeque chicken,
and the comforting smell of Grandpa’s Old Spice Cologne.
Memories.
Good or bad
We’ll continue the process,
of either remembering or forgetting.
Whether we want to or not.
