Our Monsters

Are you afraid of the dark,
my dear?
It is merely light's opposite,
the light's friend
or so I have heard
Is it what looms in
the depths of darkness's shadows that frightens you,
love?
Is it the ghostly black
tendrils that reach out
to grab you?
Or maybe it's the boogeyman
under your bed that sends shivers down your spine
Aren't you just the slightest bit
old to be worried about
"what goes bump in the night"?
I guess not; monsters aren't
known to have much preference
But are the monsters
you and I dream of
indeed the same?
You see a gargantuan thing with
long slimy snakes for fingers
Or It laughing madly as he
"hides" in your closet
Or maybe even genetically mutated
tarantulas scurrying beneath
your bare feet
But I, my dear, I see bullied children taking their own lives
Or drug addicts taking
their last breath
Or entire families being
stripped away from
deranged alcoholics
Or innocent people not only
having their dignity
taken from them,
but their life as well,
on a mere afternoon stroll
I can see ten or fifteen years down this strange and
merciless road,
A country in shreds,
people residing on the streets resorting to dirt and mold
for sustenance
Are you afraid of the dark,
my dear?
It is merely light's opposite,
the light's friend
or so I have heard
Sooner rather than later,
if issues are not resolved,
if prejudices are not overcome,
if hate is not tamed,
if love is not diffused,
I guess the dark
would be a tolerable place
to make a home
Make a home,
for you and I

Oh, wow. You just set the stage on fire with your words. I am absolutely loving how the first line invites you in and offers you some swiss rolls. Very fluffy. I also love the "Aren't you just the slightest bit too old...bump in the night part," and the "I can see years down this merciless road" part. EPICLY EPIC! I also love the reusement of the intro at the end. Do your dance.
