Sacrifice

Was it worth the sacrifice?
You jumped as soon as death reared its head
And whispered my name ominously
Instead of allowing me to accept my fate
You took it into your own hands

Was it worth the sacrifice?
You raced to my rescue
Throwing yourself into harm’s way
Disrupting the path it was making towards me
Inviting it to yourself instead

Was it worth the sacrifice?
Letting yourself fall in my place
Leaving me clutching your fading form
Tears running down my face in cascades
Yet you can only smile up at me

“I did it. I saved you,”

Was it worth the sacrifice?
Leaving me alone here?
Without you?
Without your arms wrapped around me?
Without your smile brightening my every waking moment?

Yes, you saved me, my darling
But by doing so you left me in a world without you
Which is a world that I never wanted to see

So, I ask you, my dear…

Was it worth the sacrifice?
