Mamas don’t cry
They hold you tight when you’re sad
With one foot in front of the other they watch you walk
And with one word after another they watch you talk
They keep your food on your plate
And you colors in between the lines

Mamas don’t weep
They sing “You Are My Sunshine” whenever you’re down
They act as human tissues cleaning your snot
And they say you’re the best at soccer, even though you’re not
With a smile on their face
As they watch you warm the bench

Mamas don’t sob
Faster than a speeding bullet, they’re like Wonder Woman in house shoes
They wrap you up to keep you warm
And are front and center whenever you perform
Rather, spell the word “sob” backwards and add an extra “S”
Because Mamas are “boss”

Mamas don’t tear up
Unless they’re tears of joy, that is
From the first day of school to the day you graduate
Tears of joy fall from their eyes as they celebrate
They’re quick to defend you when Maggie Kirkpatrick calls you stupid at recess
Coming up after school, with a grit in her voice, yelling “I know you ain’t tryna mess with my baby!”

Mamas don’t cry
Mamas don’t cry
Mamas don’t cry
Mama, please don’t cry
