It made me shiver.
I about made up my mind to pray,
See if I couldn’t try to quit,
Quit being the kind of a boy I was and be better.

I sat there thinking
And got to thinking about our trip down the river.
I see Jim before me all the time.
I was the best friend old Jim ever had in the world,
The only one he [had].

I had done wrong.
I was to blame, I was stuck.
And I gave up trying.

It made me feel so mean,
I were’nt man enough,
Hadn’t the spunk of a rabbit.
I was a-trembling.
I’d got to decide, forever, betwixt two things.

I says to myself,
“All right, then, I’ll GO to hell!
I’m low down.
My mind’s made up.
I’m agoing to steal him.”
