A girl must master the art of deception,
Learn how to put on her discrete masks,
To put on a show for a few at a time.

A girl must grow up being captivated by dress up,
Learn how to carefully apply her face,
To look approachable for the audience passing by.

A girl must never play the game publicly,
Never confront her problems face to face,
To whisper in the shadows of her friends.

To be a girl
Is to act
Then watch the aftermath

Unfold,
Until slowly
Light is brought to the shadows,

The masks are taken off,
And the face of hers is raw.
Exposed.

Her show had ended.

The author's comments:
This poem is about the expectations of girls in our society and the struggles girls, especially during their adolescent years, have with friends, school, and boys. Lies, deception, fake friends, shallow friendships, finding ones real self are all things girls have to deal with as they grow up. Different then guys, girls look to mental and social warfare rather then physically fighting. In order to "play the girl game" girls have a tendency to mask who they really are so they are less of a threat and target for this type of bullying. But all the lying and acting inevitably catches up to them. Sometimes people must learn the hard way. It's rough life; The Girl Life.
