White mist seeps into the infested trenches
The brilliant blue butterfly now finds itself trapped
Remnants of comrades plaster the walls
Scraps of paper holding a soldiers last words rain from above
Rats scatter across the faces of fallen men in search of a treat
No one utters a word from their chapped blue lips
The casings of machine guns litter the ground
A constant ringing fills the ears of survivors
Dreams of happiness seem as distant as hope
Defeat has conquered the hearts of once strong and brave men
A blood caked ground is now the only home they have
Youth is gone leaving only old souls and lost dreams
Minds are steel cages trapping nothing but thoughts
Some weep and pray to a higher power
Others blankly stare ahead and await their fate
Lost is the youth
Lost are the dreams
Lost are the comrades
Lost is the happiness
Lost are the men
