My Yard “Wet Grass”

I ran,
Back and forth,
Side to side,
Up and down,
My front yard.

I start off running fast, and before I know it I’m soaring.
My dirty, mud-stained, Nike’s pound the ground.
I fly over cracked sidewalk and lifeless grass.
My lungs are burning; they are begging for air,
My heart feels like a sun exploding in my chest with every step I take;
A rhythm that is not unfamiliar to me.
I’m chasing the soccer ball through the brisk morning air.

He is a black and white villain,
Just beyond my reach.
His hexagon eyes staring;
Burning a hole deep into my very soul.
His hexagon mouth laughing;
An evil cackle only I can hear.
He is your enemy,
He is my friend.

Pace myself,
Don’t run too fast,
Gotta carry on,
Trying not to slip.
I ran.

Getting closer,
Almost there,
The pain is unbearable,
But victory tastes so sweet.
