I walked home
with gashes
cuts on my hands and elbows
a shaved head
the pain from
running barefoot on a bed of rocks
and the embarrassment of
running until I died
literally

I limped into class after
being
hosed
waterboarded
force-fed inedible mixtures
frostbitten from
crawling in the frigid snow
in only my boxers to the point where
my stomach
elbows
thighs
and
knees
looked like the battlefield for
World War 3

I haven’t slept in months
I’m not allowed to

I’ve vomited more
Then I’ve done schoolwork

I no longer even care
If
I
Get thrown in a
Freezing
Piercing
Biting
Bone-chilling
Numbing
Frigid
Shower
Again
Or if I am
Forced to
Hold
Blazing
Raging
Fiery
Flaming
Roaring
Scorching
Hot coals
Just
One more
Time

Driven
Five miles
From campus
Scared
Blindfolded
Phone stolen
Expected to find my
Way back
Just so I can
Become

Sick
With
Pneumonia
From Being
Waterboarded
The night before
Now
Forced to
Drink
An
Inhumanly
Amount Of Alcohol
Now
Forced to
Run
An
Inhumanly
Distance

I cannot do this
Anymore
Trapped in a
Shabby
Slummy
Crumbling
Dungeon
My mouth
Has been ripped
From my soul
I lay
Unconscious
A modern day
Prisoner

Just “suck it up”
But I never wanted this

The fierceness
Of the hose
Is an unwelcome
Surprise
To my
Fragile state
I am
Weak

Trapped
I love this school
But I hate this
And oh yeah

Alpha Pi Epsilon Til I Die!
Because I probably will
Die
Soon

The author's comments:
Binghamton University, located in Upstate New York, is currently battling a hazing scandal at fraternities and sororities. Though no fraternities have stepped forward to take the blame the school has received many comments, mostly anonymous e-mails and phone calls essentially begging the university to find a way to crack down on hazing. This poem is in reflection to that.
