A little girl of five
Born in the city of Saigon
Latches on to her mothers cold arm
As she is shot by a GI

It is one thing to kill in defense
But another to take an innocent life, with dry eyes

On the night of December 12th 1969
A man of America, along with his comrades
All young, strong, and foolish
Enter a village
And take 198 lives

Among those 198 lives
Lifelessly lays two brothers
Clinging to one another in death
And only of the age of five

Two young boys
Alike not just in blood, but a dream
A dream of saving every bit of money
And moving to America

A dream turned nightmare
A nightmare turned reality
Reality that killed them

It is one thing to kill in defense
But another to take an innocent life, with dry eyes

On a beautiful May morning
A couple
Old as can be
Meandered through a rice field

This beautiful morning
Happened to be their 65th anniversary
Hand in hand, fingers interlaced
They remarked
That this was the best moment of their lives

Erupting through this once peaceful field
Came a truck of GI’s
Angry at life
They unveiled their M-16’s
And ended
Those two ancient
But unfinished lives

It is one thing to kill in defense
But another to take an innocent life, with dry eyes

This poem was inspired by my trip to Vietnam.

Thank you sooo much waving_or_drowning! You have no idea how much that means to me. So appreciated!

I was much too far out all my life / And not waving but drowning

I have chills... this is so powerful
