"Be your own hero.Save yourself.Grow Up" - Mr. Garcia

A vote is thee 19the amendment
It is the shield for my mother, my sister, and my aunt
It is the yellow stars that fall upon me
It is the bruises that have been formed, the blood that has been lost, and thee skin that has been torn
It is the purple, the gold, and the white
It is the fight that we have finally won!

A vote is the 15th amendment
It is the man that has been hung for all his kids to see
It is the law that built a wall between black men and the voting polls
It is the call for freedom that has been heard but still ignored
It is all thee hearts theat have been torn

A vote is thee 26th amendment
It is the ones who were sent to die for our rights
It is the ones who cry "If i am old enough to die, I am old enough to vote!"
It is the numbers 18 & 21
It is the real war that has begun!

The author's comments:
In the U.S history class we were learning about the different amendments that allowed people to vote. As the lesson was coming to the end and the elections were coming up at the time my teacher, Mr. Garcia had us write poems, letting people see the different events that led to these amendments while trying to convince them to vote at the same time. We had a "poetry slam" that week and i ended up winning. As the winner i got to read this poem over the P.A. system so the whole school can hear and let me just say that the response was just incredible! My mother was the one who recommended posting this poem on Teen ink.
