Rejuvenation

The tree was humming.

Not buzzing, like bees hard at work, and not singing,
like nymphs swimming in starlight,

but humming - a rhythmic, resonant tone that I could feel
as a shiver down my spine and deep in my bones.
I imagined I could already see sparks of green
inching along the trunk and tickling me when they met my fingers.
My heart pounded in my ears, matching the rhythm of the tree,
a steady pulse that sent shoots of energy through the earth,

away and far into the distance.
I couldn't see any of it, but I could feel it,
and never had I felt so alive.

Beneath my closed lids, my eyes danced with sheer joy.
Anticipation jumped along my limbs,
but I stayed still, feeding the energy from the great trunk

out through the roots.
The land was restoring.
Grey and brown slowly changed to green and blue.
Water started to seep up through the energized soil
and bubbled forth onto the thirsty surface.
I think then I started laughing
and the humming of the great tree came out of my mouth

as a beautiful song.

Life was starting over
and in those moments, all was perfect.
