there’s nothing as calming as clouds of smoke
puffing softly out your mouth and nose.
maybe you could give the menthol credit.
or the doctor you’ll meet when your lungs bleed.
cancer’s only a zodiac symbol.
like a deer dumbstruck in some truck’s headlights.
it wasn’t god’s gleam of light that blinded me
as i embarked under steel silver rims;
i became entranced in red, strung out eyes
of a grimy man’s empty brown bottle.
